POSITION TITLE: Director of Special Services

DEPARTMENT/LOCATION: Special Services/Instructional Resource Center

STATUS: Administrator - Exempt, Full-Time

POSITION SUMMARY: This position is responsible for carrying out district level leadership functions of the Special Services department for Olathe Public Schools.

This position is expected to work in collaboration with Special Services Leadership Team to carry out functions of the position including; staffing, supervision, compliance, professional development, and other duties as assigned.

This position is part of the Special Services team and reports to The Executive Director of Special Services.

PRIMARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for Special Education Certified and Classified Staff
    • Projections of certified and classified staff needed
    • Staffing requests
    • Recruitment and retention of highly qualified staff
    • Personnel performance concerns and complaints
    • Direct report staff evaluations
  • District level oversight of Special Education Services
  • Co-planning and oversight of Special Services budgets
  • Preparation and submission of State Reports, as appropriate
  • Support development and implementation of Learning Services Student Achievement Initiatives
  • Administer and facilitate early intervention for IEP teams struggling to reach consensus, including training and facilitation regarding IEP dispute resolution
  • Special Education IEP Team Compliance/Process Support and Training
  • Professional Growth planning for all Special Services professional development activities within district and approval of out-of-district professional leave activities
  • Other administrative duties as assigned
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • M.S. in Special Education and/or related field
  • Minimum 3-5 years' experience in a special education leadership role
  • Kansas District Licensure required; Building Licensure required
  • Expertise and experience with Special Education legal requirements, including state and federal statutes, regulations, and the Kansas Special Education Process Handbook
  • Experience and demonstrated success in conflict resolution and meeting facilitation
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal, written and listening communication skills
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously
  • High degree of motivation, responsibility and confidentiality
  • Demonstrated ability in compiling, organizing, and analyzing data
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced work environment
  • Highly collaborative team player
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, etc.)
  • Ability to self-initiate areas of opportunity, make recommendations for improvement, and follow up as necessary to achieve desired results


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires the performance of sedentary to light work duty, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The position involves having close visual acuity to perform activities of the job. This position requires some pushing, pulling, lifting, kneeling, balancing, crouching and reaching; frequent speaking, standing, listening, and walking. This position works in an indoor environment.
