Pay, Education & Experience:

Pay range is $25.90 to $36.23 for a Building Inspector I; $27.99 to $40.58 for a Building Inspector II and $31.34 to $45.45 for a Building Inspector III. Actual starting pay depends on the experience and skills considered during the offer process.

High School Diploma or equivalent is required along with completion of ICC Certification for Residential Building Inspector within 12 months. ICC Certifications desired (required for Building Inspector II and III)

One year of similar or related experience is required (3 years for Building Inspector II and 5 years for Building Inspector III)

Brief Description of Duties:

Under the supervision of the Building Official, the Building Inspector I-II-III is a non-exempt position under FLSA. This employee is responsible for performing technical building and safety inspections to verify as well as enforce compliance with applicable state ordinances, adopted city codes, standards and ordinances. This role will inspect buildings, plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems of industrial, commercial and residential structures within the City of Spring Hill. Incumbent should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, and effective organizational, public relations, and communication skills as well as be self-motivated.

Follows all applicable state and local ordinances, codes and standards in reviewing applications for building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, sign, land, fences, outbuildings, and special use permits;

Performs on-site inspections for: light frame residential, footings, walls, underslab, building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, sign, land, fences, outbuildings, and final inspections.

Computes building permit fees;

Reviews plot plans, blueprints, detail sketches and specifications for compliance with codes and ordinances;

Provides information to contractors, developers, homeowners, and the general public;

Maintains acceptable project documentation and filing practices to include preparation of work logs indicating inspections performed and completed checklist;

Approve fence, shed, sign, electric, mechanical and plumbing permits;

Analyzes information, develops logical conclusions and makes recommendations within established policies and procedures

Investigates complaints

Assumes responsibilities of Building Official as deemed necessary (for Building Inspector III)

Performs other duties as assigned

Marginal Duties:

Assist with snow removal during inclement weather

Duties, responsibilities, scheduling, shift assignments and work location, may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing.

Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

A thorough knowledge of federal, state and city laws, codes, ordinances and standards. Methods, practices and techniques of building inspections, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems, federal and state building regulations and codes, traffic signs and markings and mathematics are required. This employee must be able to operate computers, department vehicles, electrical testing equipment, copiers, and other office equipment. The ability to interpret building codes and regulations, to prepare reports, to understand and anticipate problems, and to understand written instructions, reports, proposals, specifications, blueprints, schematics, and code books is required. The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public. This employee should possess a strong mechanical aptitude, and effective public relations, organizational, oral and written communication skills.
